I cannot believe it! Another week has come and gone and I have written nothing in between Saturdays. I had something planned for both Thursday and Friday, however, one thing led to another – including shoveling the 8+ inches of new snow, and here we are again. I have a fair reason for posting today’s reflection at this late hour. This morning (6:30 am) I attended the 6th annual Men of Christ Conference in Milwaukee. There, I had the privilege of serving Holy Mass twice today; the 7 am Mass for Bishop Donald Hying, and the 4 pm Mass for Archbishop Jerome Listecki. About 2,500 men gathered to share their faith, and renew their commitment to Christ. It was a blessing to once again be a part of this event.
Renewed and refreshed, I will continue in my series of reflections on the Stabat Mater.
“Holy Mother, pierce me through,
in my heart each wound renew
of my Savior crucified.”
- Stabat Mater Dolorosa stanza 11
This stanza is one of my personal favorites, partly because it was one of the first stanzas which I learned by heart. In this stanza we are asking the Blessed Mother to, in the true spirit of Lent, “pierce us through.” Just as the sword pierced her Immaculate Heart so that the thoughts of many may be revealed, so too we ask to be pierced that our thoughts may be laid bare and we may see which areas of our lives need touching up. We also ask that in our heart, each wound of our Blessed Lord may be renewed, because the heart of the servant should mirror that of the Divine Master, our “Savior Crucified.”
